Women in India face a number of challenges in the STEM workforce, including gender bias, limited opportunities for advancement, and a lack of support for work-life balance. As per the data available:
Gender gap: Women make up only 27% of the STEM workforce in India, and only 19% of scientists are women.
Gender bias: Women face gender prejudice in recruitment, advancements, and assessments.
Stereotypes: Women often face stereotypes that challenge their competence in science and technology.
Entry-level positions: Women are primarily placed in entry-level positions, with only 14% in leadership tiers.
Career breaks: Women may take career breaks due to motherhood and family responsibilities.
Looking at the importance of the issue, OSVSWA has formed the ‘OSVSWA | Women in STEM’ with a dedicated Steering Committee representing Women Scientists, Engineers, Social Scientists, Academicians and like-minded STEM activists. The team is dedicatedly working to address the issue at national level.
OSVSWA | Women in STEM was established to strengthen the capacity of individuals, organizations, and corporations to influence policies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in India, and to encourage the education, recruitment, retention, support, and advancement of professional women and students through an international network of organizations and experts. The goal of ‘OSVSWA | Women in STEM’ is to build a better future in India through the full and effective participation of women and girls in all aspects of STEM.
