Toxic and Chemical Management

Toxics and chemical management involve minimizing exposure to hazardous chemicals and ensuring the safe handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous waste:

Reduce exposure: Change processes to minimize contact with hazardous chemicals, use wet methods, and use fume hoods.

Store safely: Store chemicals safely and out of the reach of children. Keep chemicals in their original containers and avoid storing them in drinking bottles.

Handle safely: Read the label carefully and follow the instructions before using a product. Wear appropriate protective gloves, clothing, eye protection, and face protection. Wash thoroughly after handling.

Train employees: Provide information and training to employees to ensure safety procedures are followed.

Create a management plan: Create a Hazardous Materials Management Plan that describes ways to reduce, minimize, and/or eliminate the quantity and toxicity of hazardous materials.

Follow a methodology: Follow a methodology such as Identify, Assess, Control, and Sustain to manage the risks associated with hazardous chemicals.

OSVSWA carryout various public awareness campaigns, media interactions, and policy level dialogues and participate various meetings and seminars on the issue at national and global level.

OSVSWA also has formed the National Alliance on Mercury Free Dentistry in India which is working in line with the World Alliance for Mercury Free Dentistry (based at the United States) and the Asian Center for Environmental Health (based at Bangladesh) and taken up the project Odisha a Model State in India to practice Mercury Free Dentistry.
